Preexisting Conditions in Health Insurance

Preexisting condition is a very serious subject in health insurance, since it can determines whether can or can’t you obtain a health insurance or how much you should pay for the premium if the coverage is obtained.

A person which is considered having a preexisting condition is the one who already has a certain disease / illness or some particular medical conditions before obtaining a health insurance. Some of the common things that can be considered as preexisting conditions are arthritis, diabetes, depression, fibromyalgia, pregnancy and obesity. In practice, each and every insurance company have their own list of what to be considered as preexisting conditions and they also have their own standards in obtaining a health insurance for someone who has a preexisting condition.

These preexisting conditions are examined by the insurance company through a medical issue from a medical institution presented prior as a qualification in obtaining a health insurance. Based on that, some insurance companies may just prevent you from buying a health insurance from their companies, while some others might have given you coverage with certain restrictions and usually higher premium than a regular policy with no preexisting conditions. Usually insurance companies will require new insureds to wait for certain period before their preexisting conditions covered under a health insurance policy. Many insurance companies require a waiting period of 12-18 months before paying for medical bills related to preexisting conditions.

All the states mentioned seem to be so unfair for people with preexisting conditions trying to obtain a health insurance for themselves, but actually it’s quiet understandable. Insurance companies are business institutions, and every business targets to get profit. Insurance companies get more profit if there are none or only a few claims occure, and consider paying for claims as their loss. people with preexisting conditions are considered to be high risk individuals for insurance companies which provide health insurance because it is certain that related to their preexisting conditions many claims will occure in the future and this is bad for the business.

But there are still some ways that people with preexisting conditions to have medical coverages with pretty normal cost. If previously you’ve already been insured with a group health plan you can obtain a new type of health insurance and also coverage for your preexisting condition as long as it meets certain criteria. This is called HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Or if you cannot use HIPAA because you’ve never been insured with a grup health plan before, and you can’t obtain a health insurance from an insurance company because of the rejection from the company or maybe you can’t afford the high cost premium, perhaps you should try to find information about medical help program from your government. Usually every country has its own unique medicaid program for its citizen with special health condition.

This reminds us of the importance of health insurance, and the importance of obtaining an insurance policy as early as possible before we have certain conditions that could make it difficult for us to get coverage.
